This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly regarded technical team, providing specialist safety case expertise across major programmes within the nuclear sector. You'll work on challenging and rewarding projects, helping to ensure the safe design, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities while contributing to nationally important infrastructure.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Safety Case Consultant to support the delivery of safety case activities across a diverse portfolio of nuclear projects.
Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will develop and deliver robust nuclear safety cases, undertake technical safety assessments and provide expert advice throughout the project lifecycle. You will also support the development of junior consultants while contributing to the continuous improvement of technical standards and safety case methodologies.
With flexible hybrid working available, this role can be based from Warrington, Leicester or Bristol.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Case Development
- Develop and deliver nuclear safety case documentation across all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Author and review Preliminary Safety Reports (PSRs), Pre-Construction Safety Reports (PCSRs) and other supporting safety documentation.
- Prepare technical reports, safety justifications and engineering substantiation to support regulatory compliance.
- Ensure safety case deliverables are completed to programme, budget and quality requirements.
Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
- Participate in and facilitate HAZID and HAZOP studies.
- Develop and maintain Hazard Management Strategies.
- Prepare radiological safety assessments, including dose assessments, risk assessments and ALARP demonstrations.
- Identify project risks and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance on nuclear safety principles and safety case development.
- Collaborate with engineering, radiological protection and project teams to deliver integrated technical solutions.
- Promote best practice in safety case production, governance and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain visibility of technical strategies across multiple projects and programmes.
Project Delivery
- Manage the delivery of assigned safety case work packages.
- Monitor progress against programme, budget and project objectives.
- Identify technical, commercial and programme risks, escalating issues where appropriate.
- Support the successful delivery of multidisciplinary engineering projects.
Mentoring & Collaboration
- Mentor and support junior Safety Case Consultants in the development of technical capability.
- Review technical work and provide constructive feedback.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
- Foster a collaborative culture focused on technical excellence and professional development.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience developing and delivering nuclear safety cases within regulated environments.
- Strong understanding of nuclear safety case processes and methodologies.
- Excellent knowledge of the ALARP principle and its practical application.
- Good understanding of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs).
- Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong technical writing, analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects.
- Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers or consultants.
Desirable Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Radiological safety assessments
- Hazard management and risk assessment
- Nuclear operations or decommissioning
- Engineering substantiation
- Human Factors
- Criticality safety
- Shielding and dose assessment
- Environmental safety assessments
- Regulatory engagement with the ONR or other nuclear regulators
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Engineering, Physics or another relevant scientific discipline.
- Chartered Engineer or Chartered Scientist status is desirable, or actively working towards professional registration with a recognised institution.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of this role, successful applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain UK Security Check (SC) clearance.
